Came To Save

Picture
The church is here to support the sinners.  And everyone = sinner.  The righteous do not need a savior, the same as the healthy do not need a doctor.  Jesus did not come to help those who were already good.  He came for those of us who are hurting, lonely, sick, sad, dirty and seen as untouchable by our society.

Sometimes I wonder “if Jesus was hanging out with prostitutes, thieves, murders, unintelligent and poor people, why aren’t there more of these people in our churches?"  I think that my best answer comes in the form of a story…

When I was in high school there was a Native American man named Red Bear.  I was signing (sign language) at a friends church the same day Red Bear* decided to go.  He sat by himself the whole service and afterward I went up to talk to him a little bit.  As he was leaving, a lady came up to me and asked why I was talking to a “lazy drunk Indian.”  I was furious because I see this attitude and attitudes like these as being the main reason that there are not more of the “sinners” in church.

If members of the church would take time to know these people, maybe we could see that the homeless man living by Rapid Creek is not a drunk but rather a Vietnam Veteran.  He is also artist whose favorite Bible reading is Psalm 91 because it reminds him of his son who just dies in Iraq.  There is so much more that could be learned about Red Bear.

The church needs to be reaching out to these people.  We need to see them for who they are and the only way to see people from other communities and belief systems accurately is to get to know them.
