Grace is a Bit Queer
After this poster was hung in a previous show, I was told that someone didn’t understand it. I think that is the whole point. Grace is not understood. If you don’t understand grace the text below the image sounds a bit crazy.
I believe that many people (myself included) do not fully understand grace. It doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t fit the social norms. It is not something that we understand intuitively. Jesus died for the people who do not deserve to be shown grace. Rob Bell and other Christian thinkers explain that “there is nothing you can do to make God love you more and there is nothing you can do to make God love you less.” 1.

The text in this poster is jumbled and confusing because that is how grace is in comparison to our culture. Our culture tells us that if we work hard we will get something better. We can earn anything that we want. Grace is different. We can not earn grace and we can not loose grace. Grace does not make sense and it is not fair.
